Rare Emerson Mae West Bd197 Radio Restored And WorkingHello and thanks fro looking! Up for auction is an original 1938 emerson bd-197 radio, otherwise known as the mae west. Designed by russian immigrant count alexis de saknkoffsky it proved to be a radical design in an era when rectangular tombstone radios and furniture-like consoles were very popular. Other emerson models utilized the same dial but none compared to the mae west. All this makes the bd-197 quite rare today. The model listed is in excellent condition on its 70th birthday. hTe cabinet was refinished by a master radio refinisher here on the west coast. Many hours were spent usign the finest mohawk lacquers to restore its original finish and luster. I have owned this beauty for several years now and i have to say it is the finest i have seen in a long time. I really hate to let go of it but the time has come for it to move on to a new owner. It utilizes five tubes and a ballast, plus it has a shortwave band that is still very lively today. I have listened to the bbc in london as well as deutschewelle in berlin regularly. With a short length of wire this radio ersponds very well. I have listened to local stations without any antenna at all. The chassis has been restored electronically and performs very well on both the broadcast band and shortwave band. All tubes were checked and underperforming or bad ones replaced. All capacitors have been replaced insuring many hundreds or thousands of hours of future trouble free service. A full alignment was performed. This radio hsa been the jewel of my collection and my favorite for listening. The tone is rich adn sweet and the lighted dial in a dark room is absolutely spectacular! Condition wise this radio si excellent. Gluing has been made to the cabinet internally as well as a restrengthening of the original speaker grille. The dial bezel has a crack near the bottom.
tI is not very noticeable in my opinion. The gold dial has two green corrosion spots as shown in the photos. They are both in the gold station area opposite the numbered dail section. In the photo showing the lighted dial you might wonder about the darker area between 1500 and 1100. This is caused by the dial light bracket nad is common to all mae west radios.
